what we’re reading

situated – angela duckworth

ten years ago duckworth gave us grit and changed how we talk about success — passion and perseverance over talent. this book, situated is the more complicated argument she's been building toward ever since. the people around us, the places we inhabit, the environments we choose or inherit — they shape who we are and what we're capable of in ways that inner character alone can't override. it's the book that answers the criticism grit couldn't: that telling people to work harder ignores everything outside their control.

four strategies, grounded in psychology and her own research, for identifying and building the situations that bring out your best — and recognizing the ones quietly working against you. less about who you are, more about where you put yourself.
