what we’re reading

selfish by kerry docherty

co-founder of Faherty Brand, Yale and Pepperdine Law, devoted wife and mother — and deeply, quietly disappearing. docherty spent years giving away too much of herself: to a marriage with her college sweetheart, to the fast-paced family startup, and to a growing household that demanded attention she didn't always want to give. selfish is the memoir of what happened when she stopped.

she started stealing small moments back — writing poems instead of to-do lists, chasing creative friendships, following the things that made her feel alive. it chronicles her efforts to reconcile capitalism with her own heart's desire, her complicated family dynamics, her struggles with motherhood, and how doing so can actually be a gift to others. it's honest to the point of being uncomfortable, and it's very much of this moment.
